Kowiniwini Maori Potatoes

This is the blog from when Whaea Rose taught for a term in Room 3 two years ago....

In just one week, the Kowiniwini potatoes have grown this much!! Now I have to mound the dirt around them.
Thursday 1st October.

The Maori potatoes have started to shoot. They taste a lot different to the potatoes we usually eat for dinner.   Thursday 24th.

The Italian Parsley is growing behind the corriander. Cabbages are behind the Italian Parsley.

Atutahi"s Art

Yesterday I did this picture about Hulk,  Ironman,  Iron Spider , Arrow,  and some Starwars guys. I like this picture that I have done.  It has some of the avengers that save the world sometimes.

Breaking News

Atutahi and Coby are reading on a beanbag. They are cousins. They are having a good time.

These girls were reading on the heater, in the sun.

The girls are setting up an addition bingo game.  We played bingo after reading.

Lyrik likes dinosaur books, and knight books.  Alexander enjoys funny books, just like Lyrik.

Mina is reading in the corner.

Sam and his friends lay down to read.

Letter Writing

Today we are learning how to set out a letter home correctly.  We are writing about our gardens.
Here are some of the letters.  Many students wrote to people who took them out to the garden to plant and weed, and to just look around.

Recount- The Storm

Monday 21st  Our recount is to write about a time we were in a storm.  We want to get the reader's interest,  so we are using onomatopoeia, and adding detail.  We looked at writing with  adjectives, and made lists of "stormy" words.

Last night, the windows were creaking, the doors were slamming.  I flicked the switch.  The light didn’t come on.  I screamed, “the power is off!”  I was frightened.
It was windy outside.  Boom!  Boom!  went the thunder.
Kaila

Crash!  Boom!  The sky turned blue, then black.  The lights went out, then back on.
The TV was still off.  I closed my eyes, I heard people.  I opened my eyes.  The TV was on again.  I was shivering.
Lyrik

When I went out, I was terrified.  The rain started, and the thunder started, and the hail started.
“Woosh!”  I screamed because the trees started to crash.
Mere

Last Friday the rain came.  It was hard on the roof.
Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam!  went the rain.
I was crying.

Fletch Again

Ian!!!  Fletch was strolling along the slipway on Saturday morning. I could tell it was him, as his legs aren't as dark as his parents yet.  He is a lot more timid than them, too.  The three of them passed by on Sunday, but didn't stay. (click on slipway to find out more)

Onomatopoeia

Today, Friday, we learned about sound words, or onomatopoeia.  Everyone really enjoyed using onomatopoeia to grab the reader's attention.  We also tried to describe in detail.

Here are some of the sound words we enjoyed using in our writing:

Moo! Moo!    Baa! Baa!    Swishhh!  Swishhh!    Boo! Boo!      Chuga Chuga    Wuff! Wuff!
Thump!    Gurgle!    Meow    Bang!    Clang!     Whoooo!      Oink!     Shush!

Woosh!  The wind blew in my face.  Splish, splash, as I jumped into the water.  The water wet my clothes as I went back on the concrete.  I slipped and I scraped my chin and I was crying.
Coby

Drip, drop went the rain on my car as I went to the school bus.
Mere

A dog was running after the cat.  “Go away.”
Meow! Meow! Meow!
"Go away,” said the man  "Thank you, I didn't like that dog"
     Meow!
Atutahi

Boom!  Boom!  As tears dropped to the ground.  But they were happy tears.
MacKenzie

Meow!  Meow!  went Tinker.
Makayla

Shing!  Shing! goes a blade getting sharpened.
Lyrik

Writing - "Show not Tell"

We have been using "Show not tell" to bring our writing alive for you readers.
Here are some examples of our work, and there are more on our classroom walls!

Happiness
“Whoo!  Whoo!   Thanks Nana, thanks for this awesome BMG scooter!” I screamed loudly.
I threw my hands up in the air and I screamed, “Whoo!  Whoo!”
Ryan

Scared
The lights went out.  I was trembling.
The shadow of my cupboard looked like a monster.  The drawers looked like a smiley face.
Alexander

Happiness
When I first saw Gizmo I screamed!  I told Mum I wanted him.

Fraser Williamson Art Style By Room 3

By Friday 11th in the afternoon, thirteen students had completed their paintings in the style of Fraser Williamson. Some had done large ones together, some had done paintings by themselves.  Whaea Vicki came in, "Those are amazing!" she said.
Our principal called in to wish us a good weekend, and also was wowed by our artwork.
We borrowed the tall ladder so Mrs Turner could put them on the wall, high up.  Mrs Hart loaned us her staple gun with the long staples.
The paintings have taken a long time to complete, in four stages counting the frames.

When we did the chalk outline it was very hard to do the right shape. We also had to keep rubbing it out.   Kaila and Frankie's dog is definitely a Fraser Williamson copy.
By Frankie and Kaila.

Kingsley and Karoria painted this spotted cat.

Coby's cat and spaceships.

By Shyanne
I used yellow, orange ,green, red and blue.  I looked at Fraser Williamson's pictures. It was hard putting the pastels around the edges.

Ryan and Lyrik's ghost and dog

Makayla and Mere painted this...

Great job, Rishant and Billy!

MacKenkie did this all by herself.  Look at how she put the white outline around to make her animal stand out.

This is a Mina's picture.  She bossed Mrs Turner around to get the right colours!

Atutahi and Sam painted this ,in the style of Fraser Williamson.

Art Start....and Maori Potatoes

On Friday we looked at Fraser Williamson's artwork. We decided to paint the backgrounds of our pictures first.  He likes bright colours, just like we do!
It took all day for everyone to complete their background.

The Maori potatoes are ready to plant. Who would like to come and help plant? This variety is Kowiniwini (click on the word Kowiniwini)  If you come and help plant, you can take some home for your own garden!

We now have a link to our class blog on the school website.  Whaea Victoria sat at the computer on Friday morning and put us on the website on the Homepage on the left hand side in "Class Blogs."
When anyone in the world views the school website, they have easy access to our blog.

Artist Fraser Williamson

Friday 4th September is a great day  for painting.  Look back at a post about Fraser Williamson (it's on the sidebar on the right, click on it.)
We will look at how he painted animals, and what his influences are.
We have Te Rua,Dylan and Ryan to help us with our art.

Billy's Nan came by our class after school.  She is coming to garden with Billy on Monday!!
Our letter has worked!

Thursday Garden Stuff

Today we did a diagram to go with the informative letter that is on the blog.  We all  had a copy of the letter, and we decided that a diagram of the garden, and what is happening there would be helpful to take home too.
The diagrams needed a heading, they had labels, and they helped make our writing more clear.

We still have the Italian parsley to plant for Mr Phillips, and beetroot.   Maybe some people from home who read our letter, and look at our diagrams will come and help us plant.

A Stormy Day

A Stormy Day

The rain was really heavy.  There was a pouring waterfall falling down the hill. I could not sleep at all. I just kept waking up. There was a  big flood in the sheep paddock, and the chook pen. I had to wear a rain jacket and gumboots.

Written by Kaila

A very wet day

I can hear thump! bump! when the rain crashes on the roof.  We wear jackets,we come in cars,or walk under an umbrella.

Bolies just runs outside and jumps on the tramp.  Atutahi runs outside and grabs him.
At Kaila's house, there was a waterfall pouring down the hill.
Ryan couldn't sleep last night because the rain was so loud.
At Billy's house, they had a river flood, A big puddle was at his gate.
At school Lyric said the water on the window is like waterfalls.

Whew !! We are at school now,it's a good shelter in our classroom so we won't get drenched!!

Remember Fletch? Here He Is....

Fletch is the one on the right, can you see he has not got the orange legs yet?  His beak is brownish, not orange like his parents' beaks.
He is a black oystercatcher, the other species is the pied oystercatcher,do you  know how they are different to Fletch?
His parents fed him oysters and worms.  They were fantastic parents, they protected him at all times When he was small, they chased Princess my cat away, also Gary had to stop mowing the lawn,as they got most annoyed with him.

Information Report - and Request - Our Garden

Click on the picture to enlarge.

We really, really want to plant a garden and we need some help.

The garden is by Room 2 and it is already weeded.  You guys don't have to do the weeding because Mrs Turner has already done it.

Three mussel buoys have already got primulas and strawberries.

Please, we need to plant vegetables.  Coby likes beetroot,  Rishant would like passionfruit.  Billy would love to have strawberries so he can drink strawberry juice.  Alyssa said, "Italian parsley is for Mr Phillips."
We could plant watermelons too!! (In Term 4)
There is even a peach tree that we don't know where to plant.

You don't have to bring your gardening tools because we already have them in our gardening shed.

Parents, and grandparents can you help us?
We would really love you to help us.

From everyone in Room Three

Room one helped start a worm farm for the gardens in Autumn this year.

These cabbages were grown down by Room6
Gary says..." Be sure to plant your cabbages far enough apart,so that they don't bump heads!!!!"

One of the Easiest Ways to Shift a Heavy Load

    ''Stop! Go! '' shouted Alexander.
It was mighty hard work because we had to make sure we didn't let the rollers come out.
You had to pass the roller to the person in front when it came out the back of the mussel buoy.
We took the  buoy to Room Three from the Room One and Two alarm bell box.

It  took about an hour, cause it was even longer than lunch time.
We successfully made it to Room Three, our hands felt hot like lava.

Artist Fraser Williamson

Room3  is looking at a New Zealand Artist, Fraser Williamson. He illustrates in many New Zealand's school journals and stories within the journals. We decided to paint using his style of illustration.

We like his paintings because they are very unique and different. His paintings are done in a cartoon style with a South pacific feel.

Fraser and his wife, who is an author, visited a class to show his style of painting.
